Beijing business is booming
Market conditions for the hospitality industry in Beijing are strong. China’s central government just announced it will spend US$147million on Beijing’s tourism infrastructure over the next 2 years
China is predicting 132million inbound tourist arrivals this year and Beijing is China’s most popular tourist destination. When you consider many visitors to China will include a stop in Beijing, even with the economic downturn Beijing’s hospitality industry will remain strong.
Beijing currently has 826 star-rated hotels, more than any other city in China, and has a further 57 hotel projects/13,678 rooms in the pipeline.


International food and beverage retailers continue to expand in China
Wal-Mart will open 21 stores in the first quarter of 2009 taking the total number to 147 stores in China
Carrefour will open 28 stores in 2009 giving a total of 158 stores in China by the end of 2009
Tesco plan 10 new stores in 2009 from their current number of 62 stores in China. China Daily, Business Weekly 23-29 March 2009.


A growing hunger for foreign groceries
The market for imported food in China has been expanding at a dramatic annual growth of 15 percent in the past five years. In 1992, China’s imported food amounted to $4 billion while in 2007 the number skyrocketed to $30.6 billion.
China National Food Industry Association believes that imported foods will have a greater presence in China. In the next five years the market demand for foreign food will reach 1 trillion yuan annually.
In addition, industrial experts predict that by 2018, China will become the largest country for imported food in the world.
